RUTH SHELBY (BORAK) LEVY
April 5, 1937 – December 12, 2019
Ruth was born in Brooklyn, NY to Mollie (Rosenblum) and Henry Borak. Growing up in Forest Hills Queens, Ruth had many friends and was always the “Life of the Party”. She married Earl Levy, of blessed memory, in 1963 and moved to Stony Brook; where she resided most of her life.
A devoted mother to her children, Jennie Ossentjuk (Eric), Melissa Knott (Rich) and Adam Levy (Yelena), she especially enjoyed their summers at the Stony Brook Swim & Racquet Club, aka “The Pool Club”. Ruth worked for many years as an aide at Robert Cushman Murphy Jr. High, where students and teachers loved her for her great sense of humor and gregarious personality. She also worked at Macy’s in the Fine Jewelry department and was known for her big smile and outgoingness. Ruth loved to travel and held a special fondness for her annual trips to France.
A generous woman who was an active member of North Shore Jewish Center, and Women’s American ORT; Ruth was known for her acts of kindness and mitzvot to both her friends and to anyone needing a helping hand. She selflessly devoted herself to her family and cared for both her Mother and Mother-in-law in their old age. Her grandchildren were her greatest joys and they adored her. Jessica, Brian, Erinn, Benjamin, Max, Allie, Elana and Alexa will deeply miss the big hugs and her delicious scrambled eggs; and her great-granddaughter Valerie will be told often about the amazing women who would have so loved watching her grow up.
