April 30, 1938 ~ June 14, 2020 (age 82) 82 Years Old

Tribute

Mary Jane Matier died peacefully on Sunday, June 14th, 2020 in Long Island, New York.

Due to ongoing COVID-19 distancing restrictions, a small private funeral will be held.  A Memorial Mass is scheduled for 11 am on May 1, 2021 at Infant Jesus R.C. Church in Port Jefferson, NY.

Mary Jane was born in 1938 in New York City to Edwin and Mary Conway.  She earned an undergraduate degree in education from Saint Elizabeth’s College and continued studies at Teacher’s College, Columbia University. It was there she met her future husband, John “Jack” Matier.

After a short career as a teacher, Mary Jane took a permanent sabbatical to devote her full energies to raising her family.  She was an active member of Infant Jesus Parish in Port Jefferson, NY since 1969.  She taught religious education classes from her home for decades, preparing a generation of Catholics for their First Communion.  She volunteered countless hours caring for the sick and elderly and served as a Eucharistic Minister to the Infant Jesus parish community.  She enjoyed traveling the United States and the world, recently spending a memorable three-week Panama Canal cruise with her sister Ann in January 2020.   She had a kind word for every person she met, was quick to forgive, and would brighten any room with her limitless positivity.

She is survived by her four children Catherine, Kevin, John and Paul; daughter-in-law Lorraine; her sister Ann Clancy; two grandchildren Connor and Heidi.

Other survivors include Tracey Rupp, Cher Citron, in-laws James and Candice Matier, sister-in-law Irene Matier and numerous nieces, nephews and loved ones.

She is pre-deceased by her brother, John Conway.
