Tribute

Sadly, Martin George Callahan, 84 died on February 25, 2021. He was staying at Long Island Rehab in Medford recouping from surgery. Martin was born in Brooklyn on June 2, 1936 to his parents Martin and Francis Callahan. His brother Donald Callahan passed many years ago and now they are reunited again in eternal life in Heaven, Martin who liked to be called Marty was a Paratrooper in the United States Army. He married his loving wife Mary Gill- Callahan on February 4, 1961 in one of the worst snow blizzards in New York’s History. His beautiful wife Mary arrived to the church in a Sanitation truck in her snow boots, not even a snowstorm could keep them apart. Her entrance made it to the cover of the Daily News. They just celebrated their 60 year Anniversary in February. Can’t think of a truer love story that we all were blessed to be a part of.

Marty was a self-employed business owner of a trucking company, Sanitation Company and then a card and gift store in Port Jefferson. He spent his last 30 years working at Mather Hospital where he has made many lasting friendships. He was always a very hard working man who took his responsibilities very seriously and was admired by all. He later volunteered at Mather Hospital for a few years.

He was an amazing father to his four children and an even better grandfather to his 10 grandchildren. His children and their spouses are William and Susan Callahan, Martin and Ellen Callahan, Timothy and Doreen Callahan and Patricia and Robert Maiorana whom all admired him and thought of him as a great source of inspiration. His grandchildren, Robert, Michael, Ashley, Ryan, Allison, Kristin, Brendan, Meghan, Nicole and Emily already miss him dearly.

Marty really enjoyed being with his family, taking trips to play black jack at Atlantic City, jogging , running in marathons, watching all of his children and grandchildren grow up and being with his wife who he adored .He loved sports and sharing that passion with his children. Spending time on the fields watching his grandchildren play sports was something that became a real passion for him.

He always had a something of meaning to say and always at the right time. He taught us all so many lessons in life. Although being a quiet dad what he did say was always so inspiring and heartfelt. He was a very wise man that we have learned so much from. He never talked the talk but walked the walk. While so many confuse success and accomplishment with talking about this or that – Marty actually did this or that: without talking about it. He always put his wife and his family above everything else. He was truly our HERO! Although words can’t express the deepened sadness we all feel we know he will now look after us all and be our angel guiding us through life. We will forever look for signs of his presence and cherish the memories we have shared with him- today and Always.
