Josephine Henriksen – 12/4/1922 – 5/3/2020 Josephine (nee Messina) was born in Pittston, Pennsylvania, the daughter of immigrant parents, a coal miner (Frank) and a seamstress (Assunta). Her family moved to Brooklyn and Josephine graduated from Franklin K. Lane High School in 1940. After graduation, she worked as a General Bookkeeper for the First National Bank of Brooklyn. Josephine was an active member of the USO during World War II and continued supporting them her entire life. She met her future husband, Hans (d. 2008), at a USO dance at the Norwegian Seamen’s Hall in Bayridge on Valentine’s Day, 1945. They were married on September 15, 1945. She was always an active volunteer and her efforts included the Connetquot School District PTA, Suffolk County Girl Scouts, Southside Hospital, Nesconset Christian Church (Sunday School teacher, Choir, Women’s Fellowship) and the Organ Club at Timber Pines, Florida. Josephine was known for her willingness to organize, her extraordinary baking skills and her kindness. She was an active member of the Mt. Sinai UCC church for the past 12 years. Josephine and Hans had three children, Alan (Mary, d. 2015), Kenneth (Barbara) and Karen Knust (Paul). She had 6 grandchildren: Brett Henriksen, Katherine Henriksen Shubert (d. 2013) (Robert), Erik Henriksen (Angela), Brian Knust (Stacey), Joy Knust Butterley (Robert), and Michael Henriksen, and five great-grandchildren: Ione Henriksen, Matti Henriksen, Jacob Knust, Carter Knust, and Matthew Henriksen. Josephine is also survived by her sister, Rose Greco. A service will be held when we can all be together again. In lieu of flowers, please send a gift to the Emergency Assistance Fund, Mt. Sinai UCC Church, 233 North Country Rd., Mt Sinai NY 11766. This fund is being used to assist persons in need during this time of financial crisis.
