Joan Fielstra

Joan Fielstra passed away peacefully at home on September 27, 2013. She was born in New York City on October 21, 1928 the daughter of the late Gerritt Fielstra and Emily (Hulbert) Fielstra. She was known as Miss Joan to the children of AHRC and as Mrs. Bornstein to her students at the elementary schools in the Comsewogue School District, Port Jefferson Station. She raised her children in Mt. Sinai and later moved to Sound Beach. Joan was very well known for her homemade chocolate chip cookies, which she gladly made and gave as a gift of gratitude to anyone who did her a favor. In her later years she enjoyed quilting and belonged to several quilting groups.
She was the loving mother of 3 children, Awtar Khalsa, Jay and Edward Bornstein; cherished grandmother of Gurusurya Khalsa and Max Bornstein; dear sister of Gretchen Bouwsma and the late Gerritt Fielstra; beloved step-daughter of Terry Fielstra and caring aunt of many nieces and nephews.
Friends may visit at the Bryant Funeral Home, 411 Old Town Rd., East Setauket, NY on Saturday, October 5, 2013,  from 2-5 p.m., there will be a Celebration of Life service at 3:30 p.m.
