Bonnie Jean Honeycutt Schlagel, 76, of Setauket, New York, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 20, 2024, at Good Shepherd Hospice in Port Jefferson, New York. Born on March 6, 1948, in Jasper, Alabama to Dolly (Acquavella) and Hollis Milton Honeycutt, Bonnie’s family moved to Brooklyn in the early 1950s, living in the same building as her maternal grandparents. She attended Lafayette High School and St. John’s University Brooklyn Campus. Bonnie was a dedicated elementary and middle school teacher in the Longwood Central School District for many years before retiring in 2003.
Bonnie was an active member of the Setauket Presbyterian Church, with a special interest in working on the Peace & Justice Committee. An avid reader, she belonged to several book groups. Her passions included swing dancing and the tango, gardening, scrapbooking, painting, Tai Chi, and traveling, to name just a few.
Bonnie is survived by her husband, Thomas Jeffrey Schlagel, her daughter Jenny Kate Honeycutt Schlagel, and her sister and brother-in-law Joan and Frank Luberto.
Visitations will be held at Bryant Funeral Home in Port Jefferson Station, NY on Saturday, March 23 from 2 - 4 pm and 7 - 9 pm, and Sunday, March 24 from 2 - 4 pm with a brief service. A private burial service will be held at the Setauket Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Open Door Exchange. A memorial service is planned at the Setauket Presbyterian Church on Saturday, May 18 at 1 pm.
