Anthony D. Costabile, resident of Setauket, NY passed away July 1st at the age of 81 surrounded by family. He is survived by his wife Frances; sister Lillian Mangelli of Tequesta, FL; daughter and son-in-law Allison and Craig Pfannenstiehl of Weston, MA; daughter and son-in-law Susan and Kevin Slagle of Frederick, MD; grandchildren Owen, Emma, Ethan, Jack and Zoey; nephew Bart; and nieces Maria and Laura.
Tony grew up in Brooklyn, NY and attended Brooklyn Prep before studying engineering at Villanova University. He worked at Grumman Aerospace for 35 years as a structural design engineer for many high security government projects including the F-111, the F-14 Tomcat and the Boost Surveillance and Tracking System (BSTS). His group designed the Lunar Landing Module for the Apollo Space Program which successfully landed the first two humans, astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, on the moon in July of 1969. Tony, along with the rest of the engineers who worked on the Lunar Module, signed a board and a microfilm copy of their signatures was left on the moon by the astronauts.
He was a long-time member of the Old Field Club, where he served on the board and played an active role in the tennis and beach community. Tony was a skilled tennis player, an avid skier and golfer. He will be fondly remembered as a loving brother, devoted husband and father, proud grandfather and dear friend.
A celebration of life will take place on August 14th from 3:30-6:30 at the Old Field Club.
