Funeral Director, Founder, 1919-2013
Arthur was one of four sons born at home to Edwin Melville and Mildred Bryant in East Setauket. He was raised on the family farm currently known as “Benner’s Farm”. Shortly after graduation from Setauket High School, he served his country as a Sgt. in the Army Air Force, stationed in England.
After World War II, Arthur married Martha Curtis of Port Jefferson, built a home in Setauket, where they raised their three sons, Arthur Jr., Herbert, and Frederick. Art and Mart ran several successful area businesses. In the 1960’s he earned his New York State funeral director’s license, achieving a lifelong dream. He was part-owner of another Long Island funeral home before starting the Bryant Funeral Home in Setauket. Through his encouragement, his three sons entered the family business as licensed funeral directors themselves. Arthur had over 50 years of experience in his chosen field, and held many positions in his community.
His volunteerism included his lifelong membership at the First United Methodist Church in Port Jefferson where he served many, many years as Sunday school superintendent. Arthur was a proud 75 year member of the Setauket Fire Department, a member and past commander of American Legion Harbor Post 417 and the VFW.
Art and Mart were married for over 50 years and enjoyed traveling throughout the western states and especially loved Alaska and California.
