Thomas M. Blewitt, 96, of East Setauket, died on Sept 30.  He was born in Manhattan on Oct 19, 1920.

Returning to Ireland when he was 3, his youth was spent in Ballina Ireland with his 9 siblings and parents Thomas and Delia Blewitt.  He spent his early 20’s in Birmingham England before returning to New York after the war where, as a carpenter, he helped build homes in Wantagh.  Later, he joined the NYC Department of Buildings where he worked for 32 years, retiring in 1984 as a Principal Housing Inspector.

Thomas wed Teresa McIntyre in 1952 and they had four sons.  Teresa succumbed to illness in 1979.  Afterward, Thomas devoted his time and considerable energy to his children serving as the family “builder” and as well as being the “glue” that joined the extended family on both sides of the Atlantic. Deft with language, he also enjoyed reading and composing poetry.

He is survived by his children Thomas, Joseph, Stephen and E. Bauer, as well as his sister Nora and brothers Martin and Herbert.

Services were held at St. James R.C. Church in Setauket, Oct 4.  Internment followed at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Valhalla, NY.
