James William Given was born in Brooklyn, New York on July 6, 1924, the son of Anna Rose Given (nee Dougherty) and Timothy Augustus Scanlon. Predeceased by his parents, brothers William Cameron Given and Alfred Carroll Given, and his life partner Philip A. Franzo.James was a veteran of WWII, serving in France and Germany in the 30th Medical Depot Co. from 1943 to 1946. After returning from the war, he worked at Irving Trust Company on Wall Street in the Corporate Trust Division from 1947 until his retirement in 1984
He loved Brooklyn and lived there all his life, only leaving during the summer months to spend time at his home on the Delaware River in Equinunk, Pennsylvania. In 2014, he relocated to Schenectady, New York where he resided at the Glendale Home where he received wonderful care and support with the activities of daily living.
He is survived by his nephew William C. Given (Joanne), niece Janet Given Chen (Jung-Wen), niece Carole E. Buckley (James – deceased), great-nephews and nieces: Patrick J. Buckley, Michael G. Buckley, Maureen C. Vetter, James J. Buckley, Jr., Craig Given, Christopher Given and Brian Given, as well as 14 great-great nieces and nephews, who all loved his warm and jovial spirit.
He was a faithful man, who spent his life in a simple way bringing nothing but joy and love to his family and friends. Uncle Jim never missed one family event and was always there to help his relatives when in need. He never missed an opportunity to show people how much he cared for them. He had a great laugh, a fun personality, and a warm heart.
Many thanks to those who made his last years comfortable and dignified: Richard Limbaugh, Dr. Jung-Wen Chen and the staff at Schenectady County Glendale Nursing Home. His last years were spent comfortably and his passing was peaceful and dignified. He will be greatly missed by all he touched.
